NAPLES — A Golden Gate Estates horse that was attacked by two dogs had wounds only on its lower legs, according to officials.

It was not immediately clear whether the horse bled to death from the wounds or died of other causes. The horse was also found bleeding from its nose and mouth, according to reports from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

“The horse reportedly ran into the woods and passed away there with some bite marks to the lower leg only according to investigators,” said Camden Smith, Collier County spokeswoman.

Domestic Animal Service doesn't know what caused the death of the horse, Smith said.

"No necropsy was done so cause of death cannot be determined," Smith said.

The horse was buried by its owner.

The horse’s owner, Kayla Thorn, 15, and Penny Packard, 59, who was riding with Kayla, reported finding a pool of blood the size of a dinning room table where the horse was found.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Packard and Thorn, 15, rode their horses on 2nd Avenue Southeast in Golden Gate Estates when an American bulldog and a boxer started chasing after the horses, attacking and biting them. A struggle ensued between the animals. Kayla hung on as long as she could but was thrown from her horse, Dancer, as it tried to elude the dogs.

The dogs continued to chase the 25-year-old horse into a wooded area. Packard and Kayla took the other horse home.

Packard expected the horse to run home.

Law enforcement officials and the horse’s owners later discovered Dancer laying in the pool of blood. It had “small lacerations to the legs and hoofs of the horse,” according to police reports.

Billie Jo Herrera, the owner of two dogs said Friday she feels horrible.

"The tears aren't just for Charlie,” Billie Jo Herrera said about her American bull dog, which she plans to put down if it is determined to be dangerous. “I really feel bad for the girl,".

Herrera, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, said she could not afford to pay the $300 per dog to keep the animals if they are determined to be "dangerous dogs" by Domestic Animal Services.

Her American bull dog was seized by animal services because it was loose when officials came to investigate the issue. The second dog involved in the incident, Princesa, a 2-year-old boxer that the family has had for eight months, is still in Herrera's home.

The 1 1/2-year-old American bull dog is a family dog raised among Herrera's seven children, who range in age from 2 to 15, she said.

"I know everyone in the world will consider Charlie a God-awful dog but he is not," said Herrera, 41. "You couldn't ask for a much better dog for my kids."

Packard said her horse farrier thought the dogs jumped up and bit an artery which caused the horse to bleed to death.

"These dogs are very aggressive," Packard said.

Both dogs need to be put down for the safety of the neighborhood, Packard said.

"These dogs are not lovable," Packard said. "They are vicious dogs that attack."

Packard said that the dog owner should have been responsible and controlled her dogs

The dogs in this story were originally identified as a boxer and pit bull.

SEMMES, Alabama - Three dogs are in quarantine at the Mobile Animal Shelter. The two labs and blue heeler look harmless, but Mobile County Animal Control says they’re responsible for a vicious attack. “The child was rushed to the hospital is doing fine the last thing we got it was about 160 stitches,” says Animal Control Officer Carmelo Miranda.

The family says three-year-old Madison Shelton was playing in the front yard Wednesday when the dogs started attacking her. She's at USA Children's & Women’s Hospital with her family. “The police are right now investigating the case, we have the dogs there and we're trying to figure out what decision we're going to be making on them,” says Miranda. County officials say this attack points to a larger issue--pet owners need to keep their pets confined.

“If you allow your dogs to run out and they get into packs these are things that can happen out there,” says Miranda. Madison's father says the little girl may leave the hospital in a few days. Mobile County Animal Control Officials say the dogs belong to a neighbor, James White. They say he's been charged with three misdemeanor counts of violating the county dog ordinance on running at large. They've also petitioned the district attorney to have the dogs declared dangerous.

Last week, I reported on the case of a woman named Kristi in Sparks who was attacked by a neighbor's dog. (Read the original post here.) In the attack, her arm was bitten by the neighbor's dog, who was identified by animal control as a boxer mix. Also, one of her dogs was killed (the one who died is seen in the other photo), and another one suffered fractures and a punctured lung. I spoke with Mark, whose doorstep Kristi ended up on, screaming for help. Here are some updates from Mark:

Haven't had a chance to visit Kristi, she's at home recovering from a skin graft surgery and has two more days of immobilization to give her the best chance of healing. As a diabetic, healing is much more critical and challenging. ...We will be circulating fliers in the neighborhood this weekend including the [dog owner's] address (per city attorney Chet Adams) in the hopes of applying pressure to both the owner and the county. Finally got a response from Katy Simon at Washoe County who said animal control can't impound the dog until the hearing and I suggested they change that rule so neighborhoods can be safer. Said she'd check with Bob Larkin to see if he has a desire to initiate such a change. And here is a request that Mark emailed out to neighbors:

There is a public hearing at the Sparks Municipal Court on March 24th at 1:30 pm to determine the fate of this dog. As a fellow citizen and neighbor, please consider attending this hearing so your voice can be heard. Without public pressure this dog may be allowed to stay at home in our neighborhood. If you cannot attend, please email to us your letter of concern with your name and address and we will present it at the hearing. Please also consider warning all of your friends and neighbors of this dangerous animal. If it killed once, it can certainly escape and kill again.

City Judge Sherry Paty on Thursday ordered David Allen Shore to pay his neighbor's $1,074.69 vet bill after a dog attack.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Kitchen testified that Mr. Shore's two German Shepherds attacked their dog Ginger last month. They said Ginger had so many bites on her that the vet had to shave her to find them all.

Judge Paty said if Mr. Shore wants to keep the two dogs he must insure that they don't get out again. He also must complete two obedience classes and get potentially dangerous dog tags from the McKamey Center. The Kitchens couple said they heard Ginger barking, then saw the German Shepherds running away after the "horrific" attack.

Mrs. Kitchen said the couple previously had a shitzu and it disappeared just before Christmas. She said they were called and told it had wound up on the Shore property with its throat cut.Mr. Shore said he does not believe his dogs killed the shitzu, but just brought it home after finding it dead.

Mr. Kitchen said the couple has a nine-year-old son "and we are afraid to let him out in the yard."He said the two dogs were seen running loose the next day after the McKamey Center came and got them. Mr. Shore went to the center and got them back within two hours.A McKamey officer said the dogs were not vicious toward her.Mr. Shore said they play rough with one another, but they otherwise are "the gentlest dogs in all the world."He said he has already bought fence materials and is working on keeping them within his five-acre property. He said of the attack on Ginger, "I am an animal person. This makes me sick. I had no idea."

GROVE, Okla., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- An Oklahoma boy received more than 100 stitches to his face and neck after being mauled by a Great Dane in a dog park during a pet event, police said.
Police said Troy Helms, 11, of Grove was attacked Saturday after falling during the Strut Your Mutt dog walk, sponsored by the Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake, a private organization, the Tulsa World reported Wednesday.

The owner of the dog was cited by police.

"People don't realize how dangerous dogs can be," said Dave Helms, the boy's father.
"I saw the dog bite," Lori Follis, Humane Society vice president, told the World. "(The dog) clamped down on his face. He had his face and neck in his mouth. It was horrifying."

The dog was taken to an animal hospital, where authorities learned its rabies vaccination was not current, Grove City Manager Bruce Johnson said.
